Sóller
The valley of oranges
Sóller nestles in a beautiful valley in the centre of the Tramuntana, surrounded by orange, lemon and olive trees that in times past brought it a source of wealth, being exported across the Mediterranean. Equally noteworthy were its numerous factories of textile products.
Reminders of these times that survive to this day are the train and tram that connect the town with the Port of Sóller, and with the capital of the island, Palma. The journey crosses the mountains, passing through Bunyola and Son Sardina and offers stunning views across the entire valley.
Thanks to its geographical location, it is the perfect starting point for walks across the Tramuntana Mountain Range and for enjoying sports such as mountain biking.
There are also plenty of architectural highlights from the modernist period, such as the Can Prunera museum in La Luna Street, or the Sóller Bank, and the Church of San Bartolomé in Constitució Square, the work of Joan Rubió i Bellver, a student of Gaudí.
Constitució Square is the centre of all activity in Sóller, and each Saturday there is a market selling local products here. Leading from the square is La Luna Street, the town’s main shopping street, with a broad range of shops.
There are two major fiestas in Sóller: El Firó, that takes place in May, and the fiesta of the patron saint of the town - San Bartolomé - in August. El Firó is a re-enactment of the victory over an invasion by Moorish pirates in 1561. The fiesta of San Bartolomé is renowned for its impressive firework display that represents the apocalypse.
